Yep, these are all lies, aka stories, but the problem is…
The stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the world end up creating our Identity.
And ALL behavior (every mouse bite of it) is driven by who you believe yourSELF to be, aka your Identity.
In other words, the stories we tell our SELF about our SELF create our SELF.
But… wait for it…
When you become aware of the stories you tell, you can rewrite them in a way that serves you instead of keeping you stuck.
You can construct a new SELF by design rather than default.
You can become SELF Made.
This is called Identity-Based Coaching and it’s my specialty.

Yes, your Identity decides your entire life – from the money you make to the relationships you have to the confidence you have when you walk into a room.
With Identity-Based Coaching, the focus is on changing who you be first so what you do is simply second nature – no willpower or white knuckling it required.
It’s based in narrative psychology, neuroscience, and positive psychology. And it works.
The recent research in positive psychology and neuroscience has shown that It’s not the past that drives us, but rather, the future that pulls us. This means your behavior in the present is mostly shaped by your view of your future and who you think you’ll be.
What this means is you can either create your life by default or design. And what an amazing opportunity! You get to design your life?! Be still my beating heart!
Change is so much easier – and more fun – than what we’ve all been led to believe!
Identity-Based Coaching Is The Future Of Life Coaching
It negates the need for outdated coaching techniques such as traditional goal setting, willpower, and habit change since we now know that the real key to change doesn’t lie in what you do, it lies in who you be.
We often ask, “What do I want to accomplish?” but the better question is “Who do I need to be in order to be/do/have the things I want?”
An Example of Identity-Based Coaching:
Let’s say you have a client who wants to make more money. Their identity is someone who “wants more money” so they’re stuck in a place of always wanting more money.
They buy the courses, watch the YouTube videos, and follow the programs – for a week until they stop.
It’s not a lack of willpower, it’s their identity.
No matter what they DO, they can never BE the person they want to be.
They see themselves as a failure. Ouch!
But again… with Identity-Based Coaching, the focus is on changing who you ARE first so what you DO is simply second nature.
So, in the above example, this person would now identify as someone who already has “more money” which means, they act accordingly and naturally do what that person would do.
Let’s See Identity-Based Coaching In Action One More Time…
Someone offers you a drink. Here are two possible responses:
- No thank you. I’m trying to quit. (Habit Change Coaching)
- No, thank you. I don’t drink. (Identity-Based Coaching)
It’s a small difference, but the first response opens them up to peer pressure and requires them to use willpower to make a decision, which may be easily be swayed.
But the second response signals a shift in identity. Drinking was part of their past life, not their current or future one.
They no longer identify as someone who drinks so it’s easy to refuse the offer. It’s just who they be. Easy!
You Are Not Alone. I Get It.
I struggled with feeling stuck, unable to change my life, longer than I care to remember.
I had to shine a big ol’ light on how I was the only one standing in my way.
I had to acknowledge that I pushed people away, said “no” to letting anyone support me, and sabotaged my own efforts at changing my life.
I had to stop judging others for having what I wanted because I wasn’t willing to do the work.
I had to stop blaming and framing everyone else for the results I was creating (or not) in my own life.
I had to deal with the trauma and shame I had carried with me from childhood.
None of this was serving me.
It’s not serving you either.
Once I let go of all the bullshit holding me back, I got busy creating my Future Self.
I rewrote the stories that had kept me stuck.
I embraced a new Identity of a person who had, and was, everything I wanted and then some. And my entire life changed.
It’s how I designed mySELF and the life I wanted to live, without apology, and then stepped into it like it was Cinderella’s slipper.
