Today, we’re gonna try something different.

Next week too.

See, I’m getting ready to head out to Maui in a few days for some rest and relaxation.

And what I won’t be doing while I’m there is working. Cynthia Garcia shares practical tips for overcoming burnout.

So, this week and next week’s newsletters will look a little different.

Since I started sharing that we were planning this tropical vacation, I’ve heard from so many people who have said things like…

… “Take me with you!”

… “I need a break so bad.”

… “So jealous! I’m so burned out right now.”

Maybe you feel the same?

Look… life can be full and challenges are all around us.

I don’t think anyone would deny that.

And what people like you and I tend to do is… keep going.

Don’t we just push through, do the damn thing, and try to not complain?

Don’t we just… keep… going… No matter what?

And sure, we feel exhausted and like we’ll never get it all done but we don’t stop.

Ugh…

I don’t know about you, but I’m no longer available for that.

I used to push mySELF into the ground, always putting mySELF last.

And I paid a steep price for that.

My health suffered.

My business suffered.

And my relationships suffered.

I lost SO MUCH and I’m just no longer willing to do that.

I’m also no longer available for YOU to do that.

There is a better way.

An easier way.

A more practical way.

And that’s what I want to talk about today.

Because part of being SELF Made is creating a life and business so good you’re only jealous of yourSELF…

…and I know you’re not jealous of someone who works all the time, puts others first, and rarely has time to think straight. Right?

Ok… enough talking… let’s get into it.

Overcoming Burnout: Practical Tips to Reclaim Your Energy and Productivity

First, it’s essential to recognize that burnout isn’t just about working long hours – although that could be part of it.

There are different types of burnout, each with its unique symptoms and causes.

Let’s peek at them:

  1. Emotional Burnout: This type hits you right in the feelings. You might find yourself feeling detached, overly irritable, or emotionally drained. It’s often caused by the constant pressure to perform and meet expectations, both from others and yourself.Full disclosure: After having lots of “out and about” time with friends this week, I was done. I’m an introvert at heart and my battery is drained by socializing.
  2. Physical Burnout: Your body starts to give you signals. Persistent fatigue, headaches, and other physical ailments can be signs that you’re pushing yourself too hard physically without adequate rest and recovery.Is it a coincidence that after all the “outing and abouting” I got a cold? Nope. Nope it is not.
  3. Mental Burnout: This is when your brain feels fried. You might struggle to concentrate, feel perpetually overwhelmed by even simple tasks, or find it hard to remember things. It’s the result of relentless mental demands and insufficient downtime.Wait… what was I gonna type here… meh, it’ll come back to me.

Now that you know the types of burnout, how do we overcome them?  

It starts with deciding to.

I know… sounds like “really, Cynthia?…” cue the eyeroll.

BUT… stay with me for a minute.

When you DECIDE to change, that means cutting off any other options.

Cue a fun vocabulary lesson:

The word “decide” comes from the same family of words as homicide, suicide, regicide, genocide. The suffix ‘-cide’ has the root meaning ‘to kill. ‘ Thus, ‘decide’ literally means to kill off alternative choices.

So… as I was saying…

When there’s no other option than for you than overcoming burnout, you’ll take action.

You’ll adopt the identity of someone who doesn’t do burnout and you’ll proceed accordingly.

You’ll…

… schedule time for morning and evening walks just like you schedule your meetings

… workout and move your body

… meditate or disconnect to let your brain rest

… journal your feelings and struggles… let it all out

… take the day (or week) off. Do nothing.

… reconnect with your purpose and what you are here to do in the first place

Make sense?

Futhermore… (because I’m not done yet)…

Here are some other things I’ve done or am doing to prevent burnout…

  1. Have a slow morning routine with NO PHONE. I have coffee, do my SELF Made Meditation, and read. Then I move into my workout.
  2. Move your body daily.
  3. Light some candles.
  4. Put on some music that feeds you. Sit and listen without doing anything else.
  5. Dim the lights.
  6. Put down the phone and walk away.
  7. Take a nap.
  8. Write down all the things that are poking you. Don’t do anything else. Sometimes getting them out of your head is enough.
  9. Not enough? Then take a pen and cross off ALL the things you’re just NOT going to do. Be ruthless with this. Make a plan for the rest.
  10. Eat clean, whole foods. Ditch sugar and processed foods.
  11. Ditch alcohol. Drink tea or water instead.
  12. Put down the phone!
  13. Review how you do business and come up with 3 ways you can simplify things. Just 3. Don’t do them now. Review them tomorrow and if they still feel good, schedule 1 of them on your calendar.
  14. Down. The. Fucking. Phone.
  15. Watch this interview. I found it immensely valuable.

Ok, I’m done now.

Look… the only person who has you in prison MAKING you do things you don’t want to do… is you.

And as Rumi said… why do you stay in prison when the door is wide open?

The choice, as always, is yours.
